Reading/Posting using a newsreader.
OVERVIEW :
One of the ways to read, and post to, the gmane.comp.misc.freeware newsgroup/web forum is by using a newsgroup reader.
To set up the Thunderbird newsreader to read newsgroups, follow these instructions:
Step 1. If you don't already have Thunderbird installed then it needs installing. Download the installer here.
Step 2. Once installed, from the Tools Menu, select Account Settings.
Step 3. From the resulting window, click on "Account Actions". Select "Add other Account" from the drop down list.
Step 4. You will now be asked to select the type of account you would like to set up. Select the "Newsgroup Account" radio button, and then click "next".
Step 5. The Account Wizard will now ask you for your name. Next to "Your Name" enter the name that you used to register for G.C.M.F. eg. Fred Jones.
Step 6. Next to "Email Address:", enter the email address that you used to register for G.C.M.F. eg. me@myisp.com. Don't worry about spammers seeing this. That issue is covered here. Then click "next".
Step 7. In the Newsgroup Server dialogue box enter news.gmane.org, and then click "next".
Step 8. Next to "Account Name:", enter a descriptive name (e.g., Gmane), and then click "next".
Step 9. If the information detailed in the next window looks correct/complete, then click "next".
Step 10. In the left hand pane, in the main Thunderbird window, locate and click the name of the account you just created. Then click the "Manage newsgroup subscriptions" link in the main area of the screen. A list of the newsgroups carried by the Gmane server will be downloaded.
Step 11. Once this is completed, where it says "Show items that contain", put the word "freeware". Place a tick in the box beside gmane.comp.misc.freeware. Then "subscribe" followed by "OK".
Step 12. Click on the newsgroup name to select it.
Step 13. If the newsgroup has a lot of messages, you may get a "Download Headers" window. Fill in how many messages you want, then click Download.
Step 14. Click once on any message to read it
Posting Messages.
Step 15. Be sure that you are "authorised" to post. Then, to send a new message, click the "Write" button on the toolbar. Write your message, and then click the "Send" icon to post it.
Step 16. To reply to an existing message, select a message, and then click on the "Reply" button.
Step 17. Once you have written your reply, click the "Send" button on the toolbar.
