Reading/Posting using a Web Browser.
OVERVIEW :
One of the ways to read, and post to, the gmane.comp.misc.freeware newsgroup/web forum is by using a web browser.
One can do this by using Internet Explorer (which comes with windows) or by using another browser, such as Firefox. Follow these instructions:
Install Firefox/Open Windows Explorer.
Step 1. Before following these steps be sure that you are "authorised" to access/post to the forum and have also got a web forum name/password from me. If you want to use Firefox, but it isn't already installed, then it needs installing. Download the installer here.
Step 2. Open your browser, and enter the following address in the Navigation Toolbar http://aspects.org.au/forum/ . Then enter your username/password where requested.
Step 3. In order to see the messages that have been made you will need to click the name of the forum "Freeware Computer Software" (beside the light globe icon)
Step 4. This will result in a list of topics made to the forum. They will be listed one on top of the other, with the most recently started thread at the top. The topics (threads), with more than one message in, will have a downwards icon to the left of the subject info. Threads with only one message in will not have that.
If you do things that way however you will not know how many posts are in a thread, and who contributed to the discussion. You may instead prefer to go the the icon at the top of the page that says "Tree View", and click on it. That will result in the thread(s) expanding with the starting message at the top and added posts below. Moving away from the left margin, like branches moving away from the centre of a tree.
Step 5. If you have chosen the default "flat view" then, in order to see/read a post you will need to click on the thread(s) that interest you. You may also need to use your scroll bar to move down to the message you want.
Step 6. If you have chosen the "tree view" then the individual posts will already be (expanded) shown. You may still have to use your scroll bar to move down to the message you want.
Step 7. Move to the top of the web page and you will notice on the R.H.S. an icon beside the "view" icon labelled "New Topic". Click on this.
Step 8. Where it says "Title" put the details of the topic that you are going to start. There isn't any need to put anything in the topic description, just move down and write your post. Click "Create Topic" item (bottom R.H.S.) to send it to the forum.
Replying to existing messages.
Step 9. Click on an existing post, at the bottom R.H.S. you should see the following items "Reply" and "Quote".
Step 10. Select "Reply" if you want to reply to a post but not include any of it in your message.
Step 11. Select "Quote" if you want to include some/all of the previous message in yours.
Step 12. When finished click the "Submit Reply" button on the bottom R.H.S.
Step 13. You also have the option to choose to "Preview Message" prior to doing that.
Step 14. Once you have finished making new posts and/or replying to existing ones, be sure to go to the top of the page and select "Logout".
